PHOENIX – Members of the public will have an opportunity to safely destroy unneeded financial records and prescription medications at a free Shred-A-Thon hosted by the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office in partnership with Iron Mountain. The secure collection and disposal of these items is one of the best ways to reduce identity theft and prescription drug abuse.
The event will be held on Monday, February 15, 2016 from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Chandler Fashion Center, 3111 W. Chandler Blvd., Chandler AZ 85226 (trucks will be located in the parking lot near Sears and Nordstrom).
“Tax season is the perfect time to get rid of unneeded documents with personal information and this free event is a great way to safely dispose of these materials,” said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery. “The Shred-A-Thon also provides an opportunity to combat prescription drug abuse by providing a convenient way for people to clean out their medicine cabinets of items they no longer need.”
The County Attorney’s Office encourages residents to bring the following types of documents to the Shred-A-Thon (limit: three 13-gallon trash bags or three “banker’s boxes” per vehicle):
- Tax returns and documents older than five years
- Statements from banks and financial institutions
- Cancelled checks
- Paycheck stubs
- Unneeded medical records and billing statements
- Any other unnecessary document containing personal information
Expired, unused or unneeded prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications will also be accepted for disposal. Please note: we cannot accept used or unused inhalers or sharps.
